By Jeannie Chapman

The selections that people make from the various systems are quite involved and usually based on personal preferences.

Anyone in Chicago that is interested in form of technology is offered plenty of companies to sort through. Attempting to make a decision from such a competitive array of companies is much more difficult to complete than originally anticipated. Making the right decision is usually quite easy when several factors are fully considered.

Most owners are initially focused on the chance to understand what technologies are actually available to them. The multitude of advancements that have been made in regard to telecommunication technologies is quite vast and offers the chance to ensure that all calls are managed in a more centralized and viable manner. Deciding on the systems that are designed with the latest in available call features ensures this phase of the service provider is managed appropriately.

Reputation should also be focused on when making sure the right choice is actually made. The reputation of the provider in question is derived from how happy current and former clients have been with their systems which can be directly correlated to how productive they will be moving forward with new clients. Browsing through consumer rating forums and focusing on the best rated companies is often what creates the most confident choice.

Ease of use should also be focused on when making this choice. The ease in which the system is utilized is based on the opportunity to be assured that employees are able to be fully trained on all features in a simplified manner. Complicated and overtly sophisticated controls can create an opposite effect when concentrating on efficiency.

Quality of calls should be focused on as well when making this decision. The call quality that owners are interested in is typically based on the need to make sure that consumers and workers are able to actually communicate without interruption. Sample calls should be offered as part of making this determination.

When selecting a business VOIP Chicago system owners are additionally focused on their prices. The cost of using this particular technology is based on monthly fees that are often competitive among leading providers and can be difficult to sort through. The lowest monthly fees that are charged for the most advanced systems help owners find the most viable deal available to them.

Top Desktops Available

Desktop computers have come a very long way over the years. They used to be big, boring boxes that took up tons of space, but they have transformed into new, chic, flashy tools that can do almost anything.

The price of a desktop can range from as low as $250 to as high as $5,000. That’s a really big range, so how do you know which desktop will meet all of your needs? Well, here is a list of the top 8 desktops currently on the market. These desktops include all of the features that you could ever need and price tags that won’t break your budget.

Asus All-in-One PC ET2400IGTS-B008E
$1249.99 at Amazon

Some reviews compare this incredible desktop to Apple’s 21-inch iMac. The Asus All-in-One PCET2400IGTS-B008Eoffers a huge touch-sensitive screen, a quad-core processor, USB 3.0 ports, Blu-Ray, 1080p HD, SonicMaster Audio, HDMI, VGA-in, and wireless keyboard, mouse, networking, and IR remote. It does have a bit of bloatware and the apps are not particularly well-integrated, but those really aren’t a big deal in comparison with all of the great features that this has to offer.

Dell Inspiron i580-8139NBC
$499.98 at Staples

The Dell Inspiron i580-8139NBC is an incredible deal. It has a Core i3 processor, HDMI port, no bloatware, and expandability. The big issues are that it doesn’t have USB 3.0 or Wi-Fi. If you’re looking for a nice PC with all of the basic functionalities and a great price, this is the desktop for you.

Dell XPS x8300-5215NBK
$1099.99 at Best Buy

The Dell XPS x8300-5215NBK is considered to be a rather high-end desktop PC. It features high-end 3D graphics, a card retention bracket, HDMI DisplayPort, 8GB of memory, 1.5TB hard drive, and a Second Generation Intel Core processor. One thing that I was very disappointed not to see on this PC was a Blu-Ray player, but all of these other great features seem to make up for it.

Digital Storm Black Ops Enix Edition
Around $3,625

Obviously from the price tag, this desktop is definitely on the high-end list. Most people aren’t usually looking to spend this much money on a gaming desktop, but if you are, this chic PC is a great option. It has incredible performance, Blu-ray, USB 3.0 port, no bloatware, and a great cooling system. One of the biggest issues with this desktop though is that it is not easy to get into and there is no internal upgrade room, but if you can look past these few things and you have the money to spend, this is the gaming desktop for you.

HP Compaq 4000 Pro
Around $550

This is a great value desktop. It doesn’t necessarily have all of the bells and whistles, but it includes everything that you really need. It is compact, offers expansion room (including the space for a second hard drive), and built-in dual monitor support. It doesn’t have TPM, only two memory slots, or any eSATA or DisplayPort. For a fair price, you can get everything that you really need from a desktop.

HP TouchSmart 310-1125y
$699.99 at Best Buy

The TouchSmart 310-1125y offers some incredible features for the price tag. It has an incredibly responsive touchscreen with full touch interface, a wireless keyboard and mouse, and fantastic entertainment options. It does only offer 1,600 x 900 screen resolution and low-powered 3D graphics, but when you consider everything that it has to offer, it is a great entry level touchscreen desktop.

Lenovo IdeaCentre K330-11691AU
$599.99 at Best Buy

The Lenovo IdeaCentre K330-11691AU features up-to-date components that should keep you content with the desktop for as long as 5-7 years. It has a second generation Intel Core i-processor, no bloatware, HDMI, and an incredibly easy to upgrade tool-less interior. It offers some great, new technology that should keep it going for quite some time.

Lenovo ThinkStation C20
Around $4,600

So yes, the Lenovo ThinkStation C20 is quite possibly a bank breaker, but of course, there’s a reason for the high price tag. The desktop includes dual CPU Xeon power, ISV certification for a variety of different professional programs, card retention, and a 3-year warranty. It also is rack mountable, compact, and capable of driving two 30-inch panels simultaneously; however, it still is pricey and offers no USB 3.0 or FireWire.

These are the top desktop computers on the market today. If youre looking for a new, chic desktop PC, you should definitely look into one of the computers above.

Autodesk Labs A Brief Tour in San Francisco

While I was at Autodesk’s office in San Francisco, I was fortunate enough to have been given a tour of many of Autodesk’s Labs projects. John Schmier, Autodesk Labs Engineer and Evangelist, was very happy to show off several of the Labs Projects. In this tour there were many examples of 3D printing. The ability to send a file to a 3D printer right out of AutoCAD was added to AutoCAD 2010. It processes and sends your model to a 3D printing service. You will receive your model in the mail after a few days time! With the cost of 3D printers around $30,000 apiece (that price various greatly depending on what it does, etc.), it can very difficult for firms to have this ability in house.

Here are some photos of what Autodesk had on display.

If you went to Autodesk University 2008 you will probably recognize the motorcycle in the photos. Every part was created via 3D printing technology.

Many of you might recognize the Touch Screen from AU. It is a giant screen that has touch interface. Depending on which program you are running, you can use a certain amount of touch points to manipulate your files. This display had touch enabled version of Autodesk Design Review and Autodesk Mudbox. Using different combinations of touch points and movement you can navigate through a DWG file or you could render a 3D object in Mudbox. Autodesk is studying ways humans can interface with computers. The software is there, but making it so it can run on different hardware is evidently the issue.

Windows 7 is supposed to support touch technology, so we should be seeing more and more hardware and software available with touch interface technology. HP also has hardware out that can handle up to four touch points, but Autodesk’s software has been developed to work with eight to ten. The software and the hardware are still in need of coming together before this technology type becomes more mainstream.

One of the other pieces of technology highlighted in my tour featured other ways of interfacing with the computer. Autodesk is looking for more ways to take everyday hardware that is relatively inexpensive and apply it to new ways for humans to interface with computers. In this example, Autodesk took a remote control from a Nintendo Wii (download the driver here) and was navigating through a Design Review file. Another device was nothing more than a cardboard cube. A basic web cam was looking at the device and could recognize which side was up! It was using a form of Augmented Reality. To turn the drawing object on the computer screen so that the back was displayed, rotate the cube in your hand until the back was showing. It works just like the View Cube in AutoCAD and Design Review, but it is a physical object that a person can hold in his or her hands. It can make presenting a drawing more simple for those that are not as familiar with the display controls inside Autodesk products.

Using a simple web cam, the Labs had a display that can easily be applied to spatial planning. This was also using Augmented Reality (click the link to see a YouTube video of this tech being demonstrated.) There was a computer, large screen and a web cam that was viewing a flat display on a table in front of the screen. The display was flat and had tiles on it. Each tile had a picture of a building, parking layout, or other equipment or buildings. The tiles on the display mat were read by the web cam and recognized to represent 3D models on the screen. The software running could then analyze the data shown and conduct process like light studies or airflow around the buildings. This tool is meant to aid spatial planners of all sorts to be able to look at objects and see how they interact with each other. City Planners and warehouse designers could quickly throw down some tiles and see where they can fit, how they affect the surrounding area, and more.

The last bit of technology shown that I want to talk about was the Boom Chameleon. The Labs department has been displaying this bit of tech for some time now and I was glad to get a chance to see it in person. There are many different applications that can take advantage of this device. The Boom Chameleon demonstrates how car manufacturers can save millions of dollars working on prototypes for new car designs. The Boom on display takes a 3D model of a car (in this case, but it could be anything) and allows the user to walk around it, inspecting it in real time and size. The device consists of a platform with a tower and boom. There is a screen at the end of the boom that can be lifted, lowered, and spun to simulate a person looking at a real car. Where you move the boom and screen will determine where you are looking. It replicates a physical car. Evidently it take about a million dollars for a car company to create a full scale model of a new car. With the technology of the Boom Chameleon, they no longer have to create as many real models. They can conduct inspections of the new design and get a good feel of how the car will look before it exists. It is estimated that this technology could reduce the amount of models created by 50%.

This technology can also be applied to building inspections and constructions. Using the Chameleon and BIM, users can take the boom out to an existing building, move it around a room and "see" what is inside the walls, floor and ceiling before they start punching holes and destroying whats inside. Very useful, as long as the data is correct!

There was a lot of exciting technology on display by Autodesk Labs at the San Francisco office and I greatly appreciated John’s tour. If you havent, visit Autodesk Labs and Scott Sheppards Blog. You may be surprised by what they have available. Oh, and here is a link from Scotts blog about the event I attended.

Happy CADDING.

AutoCAD 2010 3D Free Form Modeling Resource

AutoCAD 2010 has really amped up AutoCADs 3D modeling abilities. There are several new gizmos, tools, and abilities. You can create meshes, creases, and well so much more.

With all of the new features it may be difficult to get a hold on them. Well there is a new blog from Autodesk. It is called "What a Mesh." What a Mesh is managed by
Guillermo Melantoni, an AutoCAD Project Manager. His work with AutoCAD mainly focuses on the 3D aspects, and he is an architect. His blog focuses on using the 3D tools in AutoCAD, and he is quite good at it. The image of the towers on the AutoCAD 2010 box was made in AutoCAD (bet you didnt think AutoCAD could do that did ya?) by Guillermo.

Check out his blog, see what AutoCAD 2010 can offer. Oh, if youd rather, What a Mesh has a Spanish version too!

Floyd Triangle Program in Java

Welcome back again, today at Java Code Online, I would be discussing the Java code for Floyds Triangle.

The Floyds triangle starts from 1, it is a right angled triangle, consisting of consecutive numbers. If suppose four rows of the Floyds Triangle need to be generated, then the output will be, the first row contains 1, the second row contains 2 3, the third row contains 4 5 6, and the last row contains 7 8 9 10. I hope that will clear your concept about the Floyds Triangle. One more intresting fact about this triangle is that all the last numbers of each row are Triangular numbers.

The Java Code provided, asks the user to enter the number of rows till which the Floyds Triangle is desired, and then generates it. The Java Program is given below:-

package developer;

import java.io.BufferedReader;
import java.io.IOException;
import java.io.InputStreamReader;

public class FloydTriangle {

static int counter = 0;
/**
* @param args
* @throws IOException
* @throws NumberFormatException
*/
public static void main(String[] args) throws NumberFormatException, IOException {
System.out.println("Enter the number of rows for Floyd Triangle:");
InputStreamReader ir = new InputStreamReader(System.in);
BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(ir);

int num = Integer.parseInt(br.readLine());

for(int i = 1; i <= num; i++)
{
for(int j = 1; j <= i; j++)
{
counter = counter + 1;
System.out.print(counter);
System.out.print(" ");
}
System.out.println("");
}

}
}

I hope that this post was helpful to you all. Kindly leave your comments in case you liked the above code. For more info on Java, keep buzzing Java Code Online.

Remove Smart Protection 2012 Uninstall Guide

Smart Protection 2012 is a fake anti-virus program that displays misleading security warnings and generates false positive reports of viruses and malware to scare you. Fake AVs are designed to convince you to purchase the full version of said software in order to remove the numerous problems and infections the scan has discovered. The truth be told, it doesnt actually scan your computer and even if you purchase this rogue antivirus program it wont fix anything. It just runs a fake scan of your computer in front of your eyes, telling you that all sorts of spyware, viruses and trojans are installed. Dozens of new variants of Fake AV appeared in 2011 and the malware ecosystem isnt going to change any time soon. Besides, rougeware authors realize that internet users became smarter in distinguishing the name of fake and real antivirus programs, so they will definitely come up with new seemingly legit names. If youve just been snatched by Smart Protection 2012 or similar scareware, DO NOT follow instructions on screen and do not purchase it. To remove Smart Protection 2012 from your PC, please follow the removal instructions below.

OK, so lets take a closer look at the Smart Protection 2012. It has a rather unique GUI and it seems that cyber crooks are pretty happy with malware conversation rates if they brand the same malcode under multiple names. Apparently, it works. Once installed, Smart Protection 2012 will pretend to scan your computer for malicious software, spyware, Trojan horses, etc. Then, it will bombard you with false alarms.
Warning!
Application cannot be executed. The file notepad.exe is infected.
Please activate your antivirus software.
Smart Protection 2012 Warning
Your computer is still infected with dangerous viruses. Activate antivirus protection to prevent data loss and avoid theft of your credit card details.
Click here to activate protection.

Finally, it will take you to a fake payment page where you cant purchase this undoubtedly illegal software.

What is more, the rogue AV will modify Windows registry, alter system files, modify Windows Hosts file, disable certain system services and block legitimate anti-virus software. These changes can be fixed or restored quite easily, however the problem is that Smart Protection 2012 may come bundled with rootkits. And we are pretty sure that most of you are not comfortable with manually removing rootkits. Thankfully, youve got the removal instructions to help to remove Smart Protection 2012 and associated malware from your computer. If you need extra help removing this virus or youve found undetected hazards, please post a comment. Good luck and be safe online!

EDID Reader for Windows that Works

Chances are if you need to read the EDID information stored in a display you are already frustrated. Usually you only need to see this low level information if something isnt displaying correctly. The last think you want to do is download multiple applications that claim to extract the EDID information only to find they do not work correctly or at all.

So Ive done the searching and experimenting for you and if you are on Windows (specifically I was on Windows 7 64bit but this should work on most versions of Windows) I recommend the free Extron EDID Manager that can be found here.

Whats New in AutoCAD 2011 Part 6

Over several posts, CAD-a-Blog has been taking a close look at the new features in AutoCAD 2011. This post will be the last in the series. Here we will take a look at the many additions to the three-dimensional capabilities that were added to AutoCAD. Yes I said 3D! Autodesk added several new tools and 3D features to AutoCAD 2011. There are two 3D workspaces right out of the box, new solid modeling tools, surface modeling capability, analysis tools, more mesh modeling, and point clouds. Wow! Can we still call this AutoCAD? Of course we can! Lets get started.

Part One  Part Two  Part Three  Part Four  Part Five  Part Six

3D workspaces

AutoCAD has custom workspaces. Out of the box, AutoCAD 2011 comes with four of them; Classic, 2D Drafting and Annotation, 3D Basics, and 3D Modeling. The 3D Basics workspace provides you with, well, the basic tools you need to create 3D models. The 3D Modeling workspace gives you access to all of the 3D tools and visualization features in AutoCAD.

Figure 1 (Click to enlarge): The 3D Modeling workspace contains every 3D modeling and visualization tool available in AutoCAD.

3D object snaps

Object snaps have been available in AutoCAD for a long time. Now there are 3D object snaps. They work the same way, but you can toggle them on and off just as you could "regular" Osnaps. These new snaps have their own settings, status bar icon toggle, and are in the shift-right-click shortcut menu. When activated (by clicking on the 3D Osnap icon in the status bar) you can snap to a vertex, midpoint on an edge, center of a face, knot, perpendicular, and to the nearest face. The F4 key toggles 3D Osnaps on/off. Type 3DOSNAP to get to the settings window. Here you can check on/off which 3D Osnap to have active.

Solid modeling tools

These tools arent new, just improved. These tools include Extrude, Loft, Revolve, and Sweep. Youve used these tools many times, but now you can select an edge or sub-object as a profile or curve in order to create a new surface. You arent limited to using planar curves anymore. This new feature gives you much more flexibility when creating 3D objects.
Solid editing has new finishing tools. In the Solid tab on the ribbon you will find the new Fillet Edge and Chamfer Edge commands. They work just like their 2D cousins, but in three dimensions. They also have a preview feature that helps you make sure you have things set right before you edit the 3D model you are trying to fillet or chamfer.

Figure 2 (Click to enlarge): Use the Fillet Edge or Chamfer Edge commands to modify 3D objects.

Surface Modeling

AutoCAD has had 3D solids for some time. AutoCAD 2010 gave us mesh objects. AutoCAD 2011 gives us two different types of surfaces: Procedural Surfaces and NURBS. Procedural surfaces are associative and retain history. NURBS (non-uniform rational b-spline) are not associative, have no history, but they do have control vertices. These vertices give you the ability to sculpt or shape your surfaces more freely.

Surface creation tools

So much has been added to surfaces in AutoCAD 2011. You can create surfaces in different ways and you can also create three different analytic surface types: Blend, Patch, and Network. A Blend Surface creates a smooth transition between existing surfaces. It fills in the gaps, and you have choices as to how this is done. While creating a blend surface, a grip edit opens up giving you a choice between position, tangent, and curvature. Each choice makes the blend different in ways that will be obvious.

The Patch Surface tool enables you to "patch" an open, closed-edge object. It creates a new patch surface for any bounding edge that is a closed loop.

The Network Surface tool gives you the ability to create a surface through a set of curves in the U and V directions. It works similarly to the Loft command, but is more flexible. You can even choose a selection of curves that are not connected to each other. If you define a network surface with edges from existing surfaces you will get additional grips that enable you to control the continuity between the new surface and the old surfaces.

The SURFOFFSET command (also found in the Create panel of the Surface tab in the ribbon) will let you offset a surface. It creates a new surface that is "parallel" to the old surface at a set distance.

Surface editing tools

AutoCAD 2011 gives us many new tools that allow us to edit these new surfaces we can create. They will be familiar to you. Use the SURFFILLET command to fillet between the edges of two surfaces. I told you it would be familiar! There is also a Trim tool (these can both be found in the Edit panel on the ribbon). The Trim tool will cut a hole in a surface based on the shape of another object. Draw the trimming edge shape, start the Trim tool, pick your trimming edge and then your shape (just like the trim command) and it will cut out a hole in your surface that is shaped like your trimming object. If you made a mistake, you can use the UNTRIM command. The Extend tool allows you to extend a surfaces edge to another object. The Sculpt tool (SURFSCULPT) lets you create a new object based on the enclosed volume of multiple intersecting surfaces. The area must be enclosed for it to work.

Analysis tools

AutoCAD now has a few analysis tools that can help you understand your objects continuity between different surfaces that make up a shape. They are found in the Analysis panel in the Surface tab on the ribbon. The Zebra tool lets you look at a surface continuity by projecting parallel lines on the surface. The Curvature tool displays a color gradient on the surface letting you know where there are high (and low) area of curvature. The Draft tool also displays a gradient color on the surface that enables you to figure out if a model has enough draft between a part and its mold. The displays for these tools are controlled with the Analysis Options dialog box. Get there in the Analysis panel.

Figure 3 (Click to enlarge): The analysis tools in AutoCAD can give you a different visual display of your surfaces.

Mesh Modeling

The Mesh Modeling tools have gotten a bit better in AutoCAD 2011. They provide a more flexibility and give more control. Visit the Mesh tab for these new tools. Use the Merge Mesh tool to merge two or more adjacent faces into a single face. This will make for one larger face and could make things easier to edit. If you want to extrude a face, for example, but the area is currently three or four faces large, merge them into one and have at it.

The Close Hole tool will fill in the gaps between mesh objects by selecting the edges of a surrounding mesh object. A new surface will fill the empty space between the selected edges.
The Collapse Face or Edge tool lets you force vertices of a mesh face to converge at the center of a selected face, or edge. The Spin Triangle Face tool will change the shape of a face by rotating the edge of a triangular mesh face.

Conclusion

AutoCAD 2011 has added many new tools and features to its 3D arsenal. AutoCAD users can now create 3D solids, meshes, and surfaces. Many editing tools have been added as well as creation tools. AutoCAD’s 3D abilities have grown tremendously over the past few releases.

This wraps up our look at the new features in AutoCAD 2011. It was a long journey but this release had many new features. I could have stretched it out even further, but this release is half over! It wont be long before we start talking about the next release of AutoCAD I’m sure.

Review IMSI Design TurboReview

IMSI/Design announced today the release of their latest mobile app, TurboReview.  IMSI also makes TurboViewer CAD file viewer app for iOS and Android as well as TurboCAD, a full-fledged 3D and 2D CAD modeling platform.  TurboReview is a mobile app available on iOS only.  An Android version is currently in development and will eventually be available.  IMSI did this with their other mobile apps, iOS first, then Android.

Overview

TurboReview is a mobile app that allows users to review and mark up a plethora of CAD and document related file types.  IMSI claims (I haven’t fact checked it to be certain but I think they are correct) that TurboReview is the first 2d and 3D mobile mark-up solution for the AEC world to support 3D PDF (U3D).

Main Specs

TurboReview is a fast, mobile app (only for iOS at the time of this writing) that allows for 2D and 3D markups.

Mark Up Features:

  • 2D and 3D environment
  • Line, Circle, Rectangle, Revision Cloud, Highlighter, Text, Leaders, Dimensions
  • Inquiry Tools-Dimensions, Angle, Perimeter, Area
  • Always Facing Text/Markups

Viewing Features:

  • Layer Manager
  • Layout Support
  • Screen Shot Capture Tool
  • Multi-Touch Navigation: Pan, Zoom, 3D Orbit
  • Visual Styles (wireframe, hidden, x-ray, gray scale, shaded, and more)
  • Lighting controls

File Sharing Options:

  • File Management, Sub-folders, Cut/Copy/Paste/Rename
  • Email marked up files
  • Support for 15 Languages

File Type Support:

DWG, DXF, DWF, PDF, 3D PDF (U3D), TCW, 2CD, 3DM, 3DS, ASAT, CGM, DCD, DGN, EPS, FCW, IGS, OBJ, PLT, SAT, SKP, STEP, STL, STP, and WRZ

The Good

TurboReview is very fast and very easy to use.  It only took me a few seconds to figure everything out.  It works very well in a touch interface environment.  I liked the fact that it can access so many different file types, even 3D PDF files.  That’s a big deal.  Not everyone is using AutoCAD and not everyone is using 3D DWF files to share content.

The Bad

Getting the files from my company server to my iPad was frustrating.  But that’s an iPad issue not a TuurboReview issue.  Once I emailed myself the file or put them in Dropbox it was extremely easy to access the files in TurboReview.  Marking up the file in 3D was easy, but placing dimensions was tricky.  The extension lines on the dimensions “snap” to endpoints, but many times when I rotated my view I found that they didn’t actually snap and were dimension off in open space.  To get around this issue I set the view to a proper orthogonal projection, which is easy enough to do.  I dimensioned the view, then rotated and everything was as it should be.  I then dimensioned the same linework while in a 3D iso view and the dimensions snapped properly.  It was if it needed to be set first.  Just be careful when dimensioning in 3D.  The other and perhaps the biggest issue was the price.  I think it is a little high.

Conclusion

IMSI’s TurboReview is a great mobile app for viewing and marking up CAD files (and 3D PDF files.)  It is fast and easy to use.  The interface is simple and direct and working with 3D files is a breeze (just be careful using dimensions).  The price is high, maybe too high in my opinion, especially with other CAD file viewers and mark up apps being free or nearly free.  If you work with a wide variety of file types or with 3D files then this review app is for you.  If you are going to get, get it now before the price goes up to $49.99 (USD).

Price

TurboReview is available now in the Apple App Store.  TurboReview v1 for iPad has a limited-time introductory price of $34.99 (USD) with a regular price of $49.99 (USD) and is available from the Apple® App Store®.  No word on how long this introductory price will be available, but if you want this app I suggest you get it now at the lower price.  You can check out www.TurboApps.com for more pricing information on all of IMSI’s apps.

Autodesk Announcement DESIGN816

Something is coming from Autodesk and my guess is that it is design related.  Many Autodeskers have been teasing an upcoming announcement from Autodesk that will be made on the 16th of August 2011.  They arent saying what it is but they have been blogging and Tweeting about it.  (Kate Morricals AutoCAD LT blog has a post.)  Several Autodesk Twitter feeds have been Tweeting with the hash-tag #design816

AutoCADs Facebook page has a banner on it that says, "The AutoCAD team is announcing something new.  Many would say its long-awaited.  Even revolutionary.  Fans will rejoice..."

If you are interested, Autodesk has set up a page so that AutoCAD users can upload images and or videos on how you use AutoCAD.  Go to the link on their Facebook page or click here.

I dont know what it is.  Maybe AutoCAD is going to Linux!  Maybe Autodesk and their frequent partner HP are teaming up and putting AutoCAD on their mobile operating system WebOS?  (I have been begging for this.)

Whatever it is, Autodesk will make the announcement live on their AutoCAD Facebook page during a Facecast (That needs a different name.)  I dont know what it is but it seems to be AutoCAD related.  Well, what have I been waiting for from AutoCAD for a long time that I will rejoice about?  We will find out on the 16th.

Kickstarter Project to Build an Open Source Death Star Now Available for Backers

(photo from Death Star Kickstarter Page)

Yes there actually is a Kickstarter looking to build an actual Death Star!  I love the internet.  I love free will.  Kickstarter is a great use of both.  I also love Star Wars.  I have no idea how many times I have imagined myself running through the Death Star, swinging on cables, dodging laser blasts from Stormtroopers (not that you really have to dodge them, they can’t hit the backside of a bantha unless they are off screen while shooting) and escaping from the clutches of the evil Empire!  If this Kickstarter project gets funded then I may get my chance to do this in real life!

Kickstarter is a website based company that provides a place for people with ideas to get funding through pledges from ordinary people like us.  It isnt for venture capitalists or investors.  It’s a place that gathers a whole bunch of little donations to fund an indie movie, a video game, or perhaps a “smart watch” like the Pebble (I totally fell for that one and ordered two; neither of which I have received…yet.)

Evidently there is a large enough group of people that really want the human race to build a Death Star.  A group first petitioned the United States government to build one.  The White House has a petition site where you can go and present your issue, demand, request, or whatever.  When that petition garners enough signatures the White House will address it.  Typically it means some intern types a response telling you why you are “nutz”, silly, ignorant, and what you want just “aint gonna” happen.  Get over it.  It also provides a way for the executive branch to claim they are listening to the public.  Regardless, the U.S. Government had, in my opinion, a fantastic response.  You can read it here but suffice it to say there was much tongue-in-cheek, sarcasm, and humor involved in the response.  I found it clever and enjoyed reading it.  Since the U.S. Government said no to the Death Star Project, a user from the U.K. known as www.gnut.co.uk, has set up a Kickstarter project to fund an open sourced Death Star.

The website (www.gnut.co.uk) is host to a game called Pirates vs. Ninjas.  The plan is to build the plans for an Opened Source Death Star.  That way they can reduce the cost by using free software and hardware.  Free meaning no licensing fees, etc.  The good news for the rest of us is that since this Death Star will be opened source, the plans will be made available to everyone that wants it.  That’s fair.

The project is looking to raise £20,000,000 000 ($31,400,000).  The money raised will go into research and development in order to figure out exactly how to build a Death Star.  This is just the beginning stages folks, be patient.  Their next goal is to raise £543,000,000,000,000,00 ($850,000,000,000,000,000) for construction.  Sounds about right to me.  Those pledging £1 or more receive “Our thanks and the knowledge that were one step towards a safer planet.”  Those pledging £10 or more receive “As above PLUS your name etched onto the underneath of one of the MSE-6-series repair droids used on the finished station.

In the project description, the user states that the initial goal of £20,000,000 ($31,400,000) (wait, is that Pi???? SWEET!!!) was set to show that this is a joke project.  The user describes the project’s largest challenge in this manner, “The main challenge is assuring Kickstarter that this is a joke and not a serious project. As proof, the goal has been set high enough to make successful funding almost impossible.”

Will it work?  Will they get enough funding for the project?   Let’s say they do.  Where will the money go?  I bet they will give it to charity.  That would be nice.

But if the funds are raised, Autodesk has already given them a head start on how to manage the construction of this Death Star.

Chagning Display Colors in AutoCAD

We all see things differently. Its a matter of taste. As with all tings AutoCAD, all things are customizable. So are the colors of nearly each item in AutoCAD. One of the most common questions I receive here at CAD-a-Blog about AutoCAD is "How do I change the background color?" Its a good question. It is one of the first things I do when I load AutoCAD on a machine. I cant stand the white background.

To adjust the colors in AutoCAD, open the OPTIONS window. Type in OP at the command line to start the OPTIONS window.

Go the DISPLAY tab.

On the left of the window, near the center, there is a button with text in it labeled COLORS. Click it to edit the colors of AutoCAD.

This will open the color settings.

On the left side of that window, under the CONTEXT area, click the SHEET/LAYOUT option. This will bring up (on the right) the options that you can change for the layout/paper space area.

In the center of the window is the INTERFACE ELEMENT option. Pick the UNIFORMED BACKGROUND. That is the background. On the right, top, under COLOR, (obviously I guess) is where you pick the color.

Once you find the right button to push, and where Autodesk has hidden it!!! its a rather easy thing to change.

Happy cadding.

BlackBerry BBM Take Back on Android and iPhone

BlackBerry has attracted applications back BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) which had landed on Android and the iPhone. Head of BlackBerry Messenger Andrew Bocking explained, the number of applications asphalt in circulation is the reason the company to withdraw the application.

"Last week, an old version of BBM for Android scattered site sharing.
This resulted in the old version data traffic soaring message so that the impact on the system, "he explained through affidavits.

Advanced BlackBerry, Andrew, who is searching for a method to block BlackBerry Messenger that are not official.

"The only way to overcome this problem is to stop the launch on Android and iPhone," he said.

Then, the BlackBerry is currently working to ensure that the system is capable of blocking unauthorized applications. Therefore, Andrew requires time to fix the system.

In our opinion, Saturday (8/9) morning, BlackBerry Messenger can already be downloaded. However, at approximately 9: 00 PM EST, the application is not available in the Apple App Store.

AutoCAD 2012 AutoCAD LT 2012 Bible Review

New versions of AutoCAD mean new version of AutoCAD books.  Once again Wiley  Publishing, Inc.(http://www.wiley.com ) has released an updated version of Ellen Finkelsteins AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT Bible.  This version, AutoCAD 2012 & AutoCAD LT 2012 Bible, has been revised to reflect the additional features added to AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT 2012.  Once again Ellen Finkelstein (http://www.ellenfinkelstein.com) has given readers a comprehensive reference manual on AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT.

The AutoCAD 2012 and AutoCAD LT 2012 Bible starts with a Quick Start chapter that gives the reader in introduction to AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT.  From there, the author provides an in-depth look at AutoCAD.  The book covers all of the basics needed to use AutoCAD.  It also contains enough advanced material to make an expert out of the reader.  The AutoCAD 2012 and AutoCAD LT 2012 Bible is a complete reference and tutorial.  Beginners can use this book to learn AutoCAD from scratch.  Intermediate users can become advanced users.  Advanced users can use this book as a reference tool to find and know all of the ins and outs of AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT.

AutoCAD 2012 and AutoCAD LT 2012 Bible has 1296 pages.  It is to be release in July of 2011.  Wiley and Ellen Finkelstein have published versions of this book since AutoCAD release 14 and every release since.  This release will not disappoint.  It covers the basics of using AutoCAD, the advanced additions to its 3D modeling tools, and the book even covers programming in LISP for AutoCAD and in VBA.  The paperback book comes with a DVD that contains before and after drawings for each tutorial.  The sections of the books are marked so that the reader will immediate know when a feature is new to release 2012.  There are also icons that mark when a feature is only found in AutoCAD and not in AutoCAD LT.  There are other icons throughout the book that provide other guidance in the use of AutoCAD.  Tips and tricks that the author has discover and developed throughout her carrier are provided making the lessons thorough, practical and valuable.

AutoCAD 2012 and AutoCAD LT 2012 Bible is available in paperback from Wiley Publishing.  At the time this review was written it did not appear Wiley was providing a digital version for publishing.  The book is available for purchase through many online retailers such as Amazon and Barnes and Noble.  Barnes and Noble does provide an e-book version for their e-reader the Nook, though the electronic version was priced higher than the paper back version.  Amazon did not have a version for their e-reader, the Kindle.

I recommend purchasing the AutoCAD 2012 and AutoCAD LT 2012 for any AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT user, from anyone learning the program for the first time to the advanced CAD Manager.  The tutorials and examples make learning AutoCAD as simple as possible.  The cross references and appendices make it a fantastic reference book.  The content is thorough and complete.  Anything any user of any experience ever needs to know about AutoCAD can find it in this book.

I would rate this book as a must have purchase for any AutoCAD user!
